Reading/Language Arts and Writing will be following the Common Core standards, state/district mandated standards by utilizing materials/tools that supports our knowledge of the Science and Social Studies curriculum. Use of selected novels, the “Imagine It!” textbook and other reading materials will be used to develop reading skills. During Reading, small-group instruction will be in-place allowing for an opportunity to hone-in and/or concentrate on select skills (i.e. fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and question/response based exercises). Language Arts/Writing will be focused on parts of speech, grammar, sentence structure and using the “6+1” traits of writing process.
Independent Reading is also required both at school and at home. In-class and home-based independent reading minutes are to be tracked on a calendar provided by Mr. Francis and turned in the last day of each month. Students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per night (Sunday-Thursday) with at least 5 minutes practicing oral fluency (reading out loud), whether with a parent or guardian.
